Elijah Heritage Saulmon (1781 – 1851) & Henrietta “Haney” Overton Saulmon (1786 – 1853)

Elijah's parentage has not been proven. Teddy and Ernie Saulmon found a will of James Saulmon in Franklin County, NC, just across the border from Virginia. In it, his sons James and Elijah were mentioned. The 1812 War records show that a James and Elijah served in the same outfit under an officer named Hoverton. Maybe that was really Overton and because Elijah married an Overton. In the Halifax County VA marriage records of 1801-1831, the witnesses for Elijah and Henrietta were George Overton & John Overton. They were married July 10, 1810, by Reuben Pickett.

Elijah fought as a Private, in the War of 1812 in the fifth regiment of Virginia which was commanded by General Porter. He was discharged because he developed lung fever. We found the item below where he sought benefits for his service.

“9th day of November AD one thousand eight hundred and fifty personally appeared before me a justice of the peace within and for the county and state aforesaid. Elizah Salmon aged seventy years a resident of Gibson County state of Indiana, who being duly sworn according to law declared that he is the identical Elizah Salmon who was ? in the company, commanded by captain James Howerton in the fifth regiment of Virginia militia commanded by General Porter in the war with great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812 that he volunteered in Halifax County State of Virginia on or about the 1st day of May 1814 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of four months and thirteen days and was honorable discharged at ? Fort Nelson on the 21st day of September 1814 as will appear by his original certificate of discharge herewith presented, Camp Rear of Fort Nelson September 21 1814 Elizah Salmon A private in Capt James company of riflemen in the fifth Regiment Virginia militia now in the service of the United State at ? having been inspected and reported a fit subject for discharge being rendered unfit for military duty from long disease. The said Elizah Salmon is hereby discharged from the tour of duty which he was detailed to perform under general orders of the 8th of May 1814 James Howerton Capt 5th Regt " 21st Sept 1814 District D Cole Camp 5th Regt ? he makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act granting bounty lands to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States passed September 28th 1850. Signed with his mark"
