The roots of our Leith branch in American goes back far. James William “Jamie the Scot” Leith (1733 – 1800) bought land in Loudoun County, Virginia 1768. Also on the Leith branch is Robert Beheathland (1587 – 1628) who arrived in Jamestown in 1607. He and his offspring are considered the first family of America because he was the only survivor of the original Jamestown settlement who had children who survived. This branch includes George Eskridge, for whom George Washington was named. Other branches on the Leith family tree include Greggs, Cochrans, Crains, Janneys, Ingledues, Newtons, Lanes, Nicholsons, Bonums and more.

The Leith family had several houses in Loudoun County. The entire area between Snickersvillle Pike and the Saint Louis Road and bounded on the south by Middleburg, was populated by Leiths, or Greggs. Jamie Leith (“the Scott”) originally bought 640 acres at Snake Hill which is now the Goodstone Inn. Other Leiths soon populated the entire area. Farmer’s Delight was built originally in 1791 by Colonel Joe Lane, a member of the Virginia General Assembly . The ownership passed from Lane to Cranes to Greggs to Randolph Howard Leith. Other homes in the area were Meadowfield, Sunnyside, Turkey Roost and Huntland,
